I SEE FIRE
“What is your favorite element?”
Steve groaned and opened his eyes. The room was dark and his bed was really uncomfortable - the safehouse in Oregon definitely wasn’t their best - and he probably wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway, even if Tony didn’t ask him silly questions.
“I’m guessing it’s not water,” Tony continued, sounding thoughtful, “because that’d be surprising.”
“You should sleep.”
Tony was quiet for a moment and when he finally answered Steve barely heard it.
“I can’t.”
Tony’s non-existent sleep schedule was a common joke amongst the Avengers but Steve realized that maybe he - or someone else - should have paid more attention to it. Tony did so much for all of them and never asked anything in return. He fought side by side with them as Iron man and after that he kept providing for them as Tony Stark, the genius billionaire.
When was the last time someone did something for Tony? When was the last time someone took care of him?
“I guess my favorite element would be fire.”
Steve heard Tony turning to his side, facing him.
“Why?”
“Well it’s… warm,” Steve explained and Tony snorted. “It can be dangerous if not handled with care but it also protects and provides.”
Tony didn’t answer and for some reason Steve kept going.
“Kind of like… you.”
The air in the room changed and Steve wanted to smack himself. It was quiet for a long time, until Tony finally spoke.
“Well that was cheesy.”
Steve felt like an idiot. He shouldn’t have said anything - it’s just that he finally realized that Tony really didn’t get the praise he deserved and Steve would be more than happy to give that to him.
“I liked it.”
Steve froze and turned to look at Tony. His eyes were already accustomed to the dark and he could see Tony looking at him, intensely. It felt like everything stopped. It was only the two of them in their crappy safehouse, looking at each other and nothing else mattered. Steve swallowed heavily and saw Tony staring at his throat - suddenly the air around them felt thick.
Then Tony stood up. The tension dissipated and Steve couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. He was about to turn around, facing the other way when Tony touched his shoulder.
“Scoot over,” he said and without thinking, Steve did. Tony lied down, yawned and snuggled as close as possible and almost automatically Steve put his arm around him.
“Good night,” Tony whispered and Steve could hear the smile in his voice.
“Good night, Tony.”
