THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE
“Желание”
The Soldier can feel how his body starts to tremble -
“Ржавый”
He knows that it will be easier if he just submits to the words -
“Семнадцать”
But something in the back of his mind tells him that he should fight -
“Рассвет”
The Soldier punches the closest HYDRA agent, who flies across the room -
“Печь”
But there’s instantly five more around him, holding him down -
“Девять”
The voice inside his head is screaming -
“Добросердечный”
But his body starts to relax -
“Возвращение на Родину”
And the Soldier knows that he can’t fight it -
“Один”
There’s no way -
“Товарный вагон”***
Bucky wakes up with a loud gasp. His whole body is shaking - his breathing is too shallow and too fast - and the feeling of not being in control of his body makes his mind spin, too.
“H-help.”
He’s not sure if he actually said it out loud or what he’s even asking for but he doesn’t know what else to do.
“Help.”
In the distance Bucky can hear a female voice saying something but his mind can’t focus on the words. The dream was too vivid and felt too real - it was like he was back with HYDRA all over again.
Ready to comply. And he doesn’t want to, he can’t go back, he can’t be the Winter soldier anymore.
Bucky tries to take a deep breath but it only makes him cough. He can feel tears running down his face and -
“Barnes?”
There’s a firm, strangely familiar voice speaking to him.
“Bucky?”
Now there’s concern in the voice too and Bucky doesn’t like it at all.
“Shit…”
Bucky can feel a gentle touch on his arm and it makes him gasp, like he’s been holding his breath.
“That’s good, listen to my voice. I need you to breathe for me, okay? Just listen to my voice…”
The voice tells him to inhale and exhale in a steady rhytm and it actually helps. His body stops trembling and with that, slowly but steadily, his mind is getting clearer. He blinks a few times, trying to focus on his surroundings.
“There you are,” the warm voice says, “feeling better?”
Bucky turns his head and sees Tony Stark standing beside his bed, still gently stroking his arm.
“You were having a panic attack,” Tony explains, “FRIDAY alerted me since I was the only one awake.”
Bucky doesn’t trust his own voice so he just nods and wipes the rest of the tears away from his face. He feels slightly embarrassed by the fact that FRIDAY had to alert someone because of him and that it was Tony who came to his rescue.
“There’s nothing to be ashamed of, you know.”
Bucky’s expression must have betrayed him. He looks at Tony who stares back and raises his eyebrows, almost as if to challenge him to argue.
Bucky knows better than that by now.
“That’s what I thought. Now, unless you want to toss and turn here by yourself, you can come to the workshop and I’ll show you what I’ve been working on.”
Tony makes it sound like it’s no big deal but it is to Bucky. The idea of staying alone in his room terrifies him and the fact that Tony offers to keep him company means everything to Bucky. So when Tony turns around, Bucky grabs his wrist gently and tells him to lead the way.
